Sound in virtual space. The venue of the future
Due to the increasing number of digital performances, it can be assumed that performing arts will also be increasingly consumed on computers, tablets or TV sets with the support of headphones in the future. VR and AR will also play a role in this. In particular, due to the social changes in the past two years, venues are increasingly relying on digital performance schedules. Performing arts no longer take place directly in real environments only. Artists are using new technologies and creating new virtual spaces with the help of digital environments. These are essentially perceived via optical and acoustic stimuli.
The experience of art in virtual space also requires new approaches on the audio level.
Headphone rendition offers new possibilities for acoustic perception. Psychoacoustic effects, which are only possible when listening through headphones, are gaining relevance. Techniques such as 360° audio open up new perspectives on undreamed-of dramaturgical possibilities. How can this technique be used? Both artistically and technically? What is feasible and what can be experienced?
The research is dedicated to exploring these boundaries and is intended to produce solutions.
This research will investigate the use of various techniques to achieve a more immersive listening experience than has been possible in stereophony to date. The feasibility and meaningfulness of these applications for artistic work will be examined over a period of three months.
